The Department of Computer Science has a vacancy for a PhD-position in optimizing the quality of online education within information technology.
About the position
The aim of the PhD-project is to define a framework for optimizing online education within applied informatics with focus on programming courses as a case study.
The candidate will review the state of art literature on computer supported collaborative learning, perform studies and carry out experiments to assess the perceived education quality and how to improve it.
The ideal candidate should therefore be interested in programming, team dynamics and teaching methods.

Job description
The research fellow will be associated with the Applied Information Technology research group at the Department of Computer Science and the Centre for Excellent IT Education EXCITED. The candidate will design a research project pertaining to the groups' interest in IT education methods.
The completion of a PhD program at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology requires accepted publications at accredited journals and conferences. The candidate is thus expected to review the teaching methods literature and advance the scientific knowledge in the field of online learning.
The main activities are literature review, data gathering, data analysis, assessment of various methods and finally dissemination through peer-reviewed journals.
Qualification requirements
PhD candidate:
The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master's degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in Informatics, Computer Science or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU's grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant
. Good written and oral skills in English.
. For foreign applicants, the motivation to learn Norwegian is encouraged and courses are offered by the university.

Salary and conditions
PhD candidate:
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 4 years with teaching duties equvivalent to 25%. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in programming, team dynamics and teaching methods.
As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.
Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
