About the position
We have a vacancy for a PhD candidate at the Department of Marine Technology NTNU for the InteDiag-WTCP project: Perception & Fusion of Multidimensional Information & Cooperative Decision-making for Intelligent Diagnosis of Wind Turbine Critical Parts.
The Department of Marine Technology (IMT) is a world leader in education, research, and innovation for engineering systems in the marine environment. We specialize in methods and techniques which facilitate the assessment, development, and sustainable operation of Norway's biggest export industries - oil and gas extraction at sea, ship technology with corresponding equipment industry, fisheries technology and aquaculture technology- as well as newer developments including offshore renewable energy (wind, wave, and current), coastal infrastructure such as floating bridges, and marine robotics for mapping and monitoring the ocean environment, including polar regions.
The InteDiag-WTCP project is a collaborative project between China and Norway. The Chinese team is led by Hunan University, in collaboration with Central South University, Hunan University of Science and Technology and two leading wind power companies XEMC WINDPOWER and GOLDWIND TECHNOLOGY. The Norwegian team is led by Norwegian University of Science and Technology , in collaboration with two monitoring and digital service companies, EDR & MEDESO AS and SAFETEC NORDIC AS. The goal is to use digital and intelligent solutions for structural health/condition monitoring to address the issues of high failure rate and high operation/maintenance cost of wind turbines.
The focus of this PhD position is to develop digital twin solutions for monitoring and prognosis of drivetrain faults and failures in wind turbines. We offer the opportunity to work in a very inspiring and motivating research group. Thanks to our industrial collaborations, the candidate will also gain significant industrial insights through secondment and industrial collaboration. The candidate will also actively participate in symposia, workshops and international conferences.
The position reports to Profs. Amir Nejad and Zhen Gao.
Duties of the position
- Development of digital twin platform for condition monitoring and remaining useful life (RUL) estimation
- Model verification and validation by field measurements
Required selection criteria
-
- The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master's degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Mechatronics or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.
- Good written and oral English language skills is also required. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)
Preferred selection criteria
- Background or interest in programming (Matlab, python, java, C/C++, .), familiar with ANSYS or Multi-body dynamic tools and good knowledge of statistics will be an advantage.

Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 3 years.
Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Engineering (https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phiv ) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
