We have an exciting three-year postdoctoral research position available to study the intergenerational transmission of eating disorders. The candidate will work on data from more than 100,000 children and their parents from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa), including genotype data and longitudinal follow-up from pregnancy onwards.
Recent advances in genetic methods and collection of biological samples in population cohorts have made it possible to calculate individuals' polygenic risk for mental disorders and other traits. We will leverage these developments to answer the following research questions: 1) How does polygenic risk for eating disorders manifest (i.e. in signs and symptoms) in females and males at different stages of development? 2) How are eating disorders transmitted from parents to offspring?, and 3) Which environmental factors reduce or increase adverse phenotypic expressions of polygenic risk?
The postdoctoral researcher will lead the project at Nic Waals Institute in collaboration with Alexandra Havdahl (PI). The successful candidate will become part of an international and multi-institutional research environment. The research group includes internationally recognized experts on eating disorders, genetics, epidemiology, and cohort studies, such as George Davey Smith (University of Bristol), Cynthia Bulik (Karolinska Institutet), David Evans (University of Queensland), Ted Reichborn-Kjennerud (Norwegian Institute of Public Health; NIPH), Per Magnus (NIPH), Gun Peggy Knudsen (NIPH), and Camilla Stoltenberg (NIPH).
The position involves staying one year at the MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit at the University of Bristol, and includes an exchange fellowship for travel and accommodation expenses.
Start date: June 1st 2019 or as soon as possible after this date
