Stillingsannonsen er inaktiv.Norges miljø- og biovitenskapelige universitet (NMBU)
Universitetstunet 3, 1430 Ås
About the position
The Faculty of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Science (KBM) at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant 3-year PhD–position within environmental microbiology. The successful candidate will be anchored in the research group Microbial Ecology and Physiology at KBM (https://www.nmbu.no/fakultet/kbm/forskning/forskningsgrupper/environmental-microbiology) and the NMBU Nitrogen group (https://www.nmbu.no/en/research/groups/nitrogen).
The PhD-project is entitled “Microbes meeting real-life challenges: understanding how denitrifying bacteria handle oxidative stress and starvation - a prerequisite for novel biotechnological applications”.
The project will increase the understanding of microbial nitrogen red/ox transformations. Such processes cause emission of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) to the atmosphere, and a long-term goal of our research is to develop novel techniques to reduce N2O emissions. In this project the PhD candidate will study effect of various stressors on the regulation of N2O emissions in selected model strains and newly isolated strains. The ultimate aim is to understand regulation of denitrification in natural environments and to strengthen ongoing attempts to bioengineer soil communities to reduce the emissions of N2O.
Main tasks
As part of the project, the candidate will study the respiratory physiology of denitrifying prokaryotes (mainly bacteria) through:
- Gas kinetics and gene expression in new isolates, model organism(s) and mutants under a range of conditions
- Proteomics of denitrifying cultures
- Confocal microscopy
- Genomics/bioinformatics
- Molecular manipulations (including CRISPRi) of selected strains
The successful candidate is expected to enter a plan for the progress of the work towards a PhD degree during the first months of the appointment, with a view to completing a doctorate within the PhD scholarship period.
Competence
The successful applicant must meet the conditions defined for admission to a PhD programme at NMBU. The applicant must have an academically relevant education corresponding to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are at master's degree level. The applicant must have a documented strong academic background from previous studies and be able to document proficiency in both written and oral English. For more detailed information on the admission criteria please see the PhD Regulations and the relevant PhD programme description. The applicant must document expertise and interest in the research subject (microbiology).
Required Academic qualifications
- The successful applicant must hold (or expect to complete within June 2021) a master’s degree within a relevant field (biosciences, microbiology, biochemistry)
Emphasize will be on candidates with at least 3 of the following experiences and skills:
- Microbiology skills
- Molecular techniques
- Proteomics
- Bioinformatics
- Enzyme kinetics
You need to:
- Be accurate and patient with experimental work
- Have strong communication skills, both written and oral English, and, preferably, a Scandinavian labguage
- Have analytical skills
- Have interest and ability to collaborate closely with supervisors and partners
- Be able to work independently
- Show flexibility, robustness and staying power
Remuneration and further information
