About the position
The Faculty of Technolgy, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacancy for a position as PhD Research Fellow in Applied Micro- and Nanosystems from 15.08.2020.
The position is located at the Department of Microsystems (IMS) and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Campus Vestfold in Horten.
The focused research will be on micro- and nanotechnologies to improve neural controlled protheses. By using implanted neural electrodes based on micro- and nanotechnologies together with interface and control electronics, improved performance of protheses can be achieved and thus lead to increased quality of life for the user.
About the PhD-project
The number of limb amputation in the world has grown significantly over the last years. Both traumatic accidents due to land mines and diseases like diabetes are major contributors to the increased numbers. Analyses of the protheses market shows deficiency in existing devices, not being able to fully meet the requirements and expectations from the users. Protheses such as artificial hands is expected to act in the same way as the limb it replaces, not only in movement possibilities and control, but also regarding tactile sensing. However, current state of the art artificial hands are still far from reaching the abilities of a healthy hand.
At IMS we aim to develop a neuroprothesis hand for patients with an amputated hand and forearm. The hand will be equipped with feedback sensors, providing bidirectonal connection between the prothesis and the peripheral nervous system in the patients forarm stump. Both neural and tactile interface will be the theme of this PhD research. The neural interface includes development of implantable electrodes that are to be in contact with nerve fascicles in the forarm, while the tacticle interface covers tactile sensors and skin imitating materials for the hand prothesis surfaces. Another essential part of the research is the integration of the neural and tactile interfaces with the electronic signal prosessing unit; which handles the neural and tactile signals, and controls the hand motion.
Appointment is for a period of three years. The position does not include teaching duties.
