Research scientist position in Management Strategy Evaluation
Jobbnorge ID: 193042
About the position
The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in Norway has an immediate opening for a permanent position as research scientist in the research group Demersal Fish. The group works on research, monitoring, stock assessment and advice on demersal fish species, using biological, statistical and computer models. The group works in close collaboration with other research groups at the IMR and contributes to associated research fields including impacts of climate change, ecology, integrated ecosystem-based management to name a few. Extensive research collaboration with national and international institutions is expected and encouraged.
Areas of research
The principal areas of research for the current scientist position will be in carrying out and developing methods and tools for Management Strategy Evaluation. The scientist will work with other scientists, technicians and programmers in different research groups to carry out MSEs on stocks IMR gives advice on through ICES benchmark processes, in addition to contributing to existing research projects (e.g. REDUS and SIS-HØSTING). The scientist will be expected to contribute to MSEs across a variety of fish and shellfish stocks, not limited to demersal fish. It is also expected that the successful candidate will contribute to, and lead the institutes research on, developing existing and new methods for MSE. Research topics will include developing the linkage between models, developing and analyzing management strategies, and characterizing and analyzing the relative importance of different sources of uncertainty. Although current ICES MSEs are primarily single-species focused, the successful candidate is expected to carry out research to expand MSE in a multi-species and ecosystem-based context using appropriate multispecies and ecosystem models (e.g. GADGET, Atlantis, Norwecom and Ecopath - Ecosim).
Qualification requirements
Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent degree involving modeling, for example via applied mathematics, applied statistics, fish population modeling, ecological modeling or a related quantitative field. Experience of fisheries modeling, and especially Management Strategy Evaluations, is an advantage but not a requirement.
The successful candidate will have strong quantitative skills and experience in programming in R. Experience in an additional programming language (for example C++) would be an advantage. The ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team setting is necessary. Good oral and written communication skills in English are required.
The working language at IMR is Norwegian, and good communication skills in Norwegian will be beneficial for both the applicant and IMR. Sufficient progression in learning to speak and write Norwegian is expected during the first two years of employment. If needed, language training will be offered and costs incurred will be reimbursed based upon completion of the language course.
