About the position
A PhD position in sociology/political science is vacant at the Department of Sociology and Political Science, NTNU. It is a temporary position for a period of three years (with a possible one-year extension for a research stay abroad), without teaching obligations. The position shall provide promising research recruits the opportunity for professional development through studies towards a Ph.D. The position is connected to the research group CHAIN, which is a Centre focusing on socioeconomic inequalities in health, at the Department of Sociology and Political Science, NTNU.
The PhD position is part of the NFR-funded project: "Trade, Labour Markets and Health".
The primary aim of this project is to generate new knowledge about how trade impacts population health through labour market and social protection pathways. Previous research into the health impacts of trade has been limited by a focus on healthcare services and individual lifestyle factors. At the same time, public health literature has convincingly demonstrated the importance of social protection and labour market conditions for health, but has not considered the role of trade policy in influencing these conditions. The PhD project will contribute to addressing this research gap. We are specifically interested in research projects which explore these issues in the context of a low- or middle-income country (or countries).
Job description
- The PhD position is connected to the Departments' CHAIN research group.
- It is required that the candidate participates in international activities, including through research stays at educational institutions abroad.
- Applicants will be assessed by (1) the quality and potential of the project sketch and (2) the quality and relevance of their academic work/background.
- The candidate is free to develop his or her research project, but it should align with the umbrella project's main objective: to generate new knowledge about how trade impacts population health through labour market and social protection pathways
Qualification requirements
The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master's degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in social or political science or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU's grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

- 1-2 years relevant experience in research, such as dissemination and participation in research projects will be ascribed high importance.
- Experience in dissemination in English

Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 per annum before tax. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 3 years (with possible one-year extension). Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in social science. More information about the PhD program is available at: https://www.ntnu.edu/su/phd.
As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.
Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
